Overall Range
Sitka spruce grows along the North Pacific coast, ranging from northern California to southcentral Alaska. It mainly forms a thin strip along the coastline, closely following cool, moist maritime environments.
Core Distribution Area
The most extensive portion of its range, in both width and elevation, is found in southeast Alaska and northern British Columbia. In this region, the range can widen to about 130 miles inland. It includes major island systems such as the Alexander Archipelago (Alaska) and the Queen Charlotte Islands (British Columbia), along with the continuous coastal strip of forest.
Range Limits and Variation
At the Gulf of Alaska, the range is restricted by steep mountains and large glaciers that border the shoreline. However, it expands again around Prince William Sound.
Farther south, Sitka spruce continues along the Oregon and Washington coasts, sometimes extending inland along river valleys where moisture levels remain high. In northern California, the range becomes more patchy, with a small isolated stand in Mendocino County marking its southernmost limit.
